Here in Ballycroneen NS we encourage our students to become environmentally aware and to show them how they can contribute to reducing our carbon footprint. We have a Green Schools Committee made up of students and adults from the school community to promote environmental awareness .We have been awarded many flags for our efforts and these include: a flag for Litter and Waste, a flag for Energy, a flag for Water Conservation and a flag for sustainable travel.
Transport is the fourth theme of the Green Schools programme. The ultimate aim of the theme is to increase the number of students walking, cycling, scooting, using public transport or carpooling on the way to school. We aim to promote sustainable travel. We took part in various activities over the past two years including:
a road safety audit of the surroundinf area
surveyed families on their main mode of transport to school
a Scoot at School workshop based on safe scooter usage (Infant Classes)
a Cycle Right programme based on safe bike usage (4th-6th classes)
an environmental workshop based on the effects of vechicles on the environment
an Action Day where the children walked to our local beach and created posters promoting alternative modes of transport using materials they found on the beach.
As part of the Green Schools programme, 4th - 6th classes took part in a 6-week cycling course that focused on safe cycling and practices in our locality. For their final session, the children out their skills to the test with a cycle around our local village of Cloyne.

Water is the third theme that schools undertake. This theme looks at the steps which can be taken to conserve water and how to manage this resource in our schools and homes
Energy is the second theme that schools undertake. This theme looks at the steps which can be taken to reduce energy consumption and raise awareness of climate change issues.
Litter & Waste is the first theme of the Green-Schools programme. The theme is a great starting point for encouraging a sense of personal pride and responsibility in tackling two visible issues in schools and communities.
